On the 25th day, of the month of September, in the year of 2015 a spark was ignited for me. A day that would change the trajectory of my entire life, 72 degrees, calm, quiet but vibrant day in the small town of Tuxedo, NY. My family and I had taken a trip to visit the Faire in Tuxedo for the weekend. With no plans other than having a good time we set off into the Faire to enjoy ourselves.

Amidst the bustling crowds and colorful tents adorned with banners, my eyes were drawn to a small gathering near the edge of the faire grounds. A modest sign read, "Sky Kings Falconry," and curiosity pulled me closer.
There, standing amidst a small circle of spectators, was a handler with a regal bird perched proudly upon a leather-gloved hand. It was a majestic falcon, its piercing gaze scanning the crowd with an air of silent dignity. The handler began to speak, weaving tales of ancient falconry traditions and the noble history of these avian companions.
With a gentle command, the falcon took flight, its wings slicing through the air with a grace that seemed almost otherworldly. As it flew effortlessly just above our heads, I felt a deep sense of awe and connection—a profound respect for this creature that seemed to transcend time itself.

In that moment, something stirred within me—a passion ignited by the raw beauty and silent strength of the hawk. I returned to the faire year after year, drawn to the avian demonstrations like a pilgrim to a sacred site. Each visit deepened my fascination, prompting me to devour books on falconry, raptors, and their habitats.
My newfound passion for birds of prey soon evolved beyond mere fascination; it became a mission. I sought out volunteer opportunities at wildlife rehabilitation centers, learning about conservation efforts and the vital role these birds play in maintaining ecosystems. I became an advocate, sharing their stories with friends and family, and eventually, founding a nonprofit dedicated to educating others about these magnificent creatures.
Every year I still return to the Faire and speak with the falconer there (Kevin of Sky Kings Falconry). He has provided me with a great amount of inspiration, advice and motivation to keep going.
Many people have helped me along the way, I've been extremely fortunate to have great mentors. I would not have been able to make it where I am today without the help of Mary-Beth. Without her knowledge and guidance I would not have had the opportunity to learn and grow as much as I have. Her knowledge is a tapestry woven from years of experience—a tapestry that tells stories of resilience, hope, and the unbreakable spirit of the birds she champions. From orphaned owlets to injured hawks, each patient receives not only medical care but also a lifeline of empathy and understanding.

Mary-Beth has become a beacon in the community, tirelessly educating others about the plight of birds of prey and the crucial role they play in our ecosystem. Her voice echoes in classrooms and community events, raising awareness and fostering a generation of conservationists. Her continuing legacy is measured not only in the number of birds saved but in the hearts she has touched and the minds she has inspired over the years. I hope to follow in that legacy.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the myriad of Falconry mentors I've had. My mentor Tom has been able to bestow upon me an incredible amount of information about the art of Falconry and I'm still learning, always will be. Everyone from the Massachusetts Falconry and Hawk trust who has helped me over the years, falconers from other states and countries, my apprentices who inspire me and teach me new things every year, and the list goes on. I'm increasingly grateful to everyone who has generously gave their time to help or just listen to me speak about raptors.
Today, as I look back on that serendipitous day at the Renaissance Faire, I realize it was
more than just a chance encounter—it was the moment my life's path took flight alongside that noble falcon. From medieval lore to modern-day conservation, my journey with birds of prey continues to inspire and educate, fueled by the enduring magic of that initial encounter.
In every soaring wing beat and every piercing gaze, I find reaffirmation of my purpose—to protect, educate, and advocate for these winged ambassadors of the wild.

With gratitude,
